Senior’s Fitness Professional Cia Tweel Receives 40 Years of Service Award from YMCA.
Each year, the Halifax YMCA holds a Strong Staff Event and honours their people with Service Awards. This year had 5, 10, 20 and 25 year award recipients… and one with 40 years of service – Cia Tweel!
The John W. Lindsay YMCA Vice President, Michelle Rivoire presented Cia the 40 Years of Service Award and said that it is an amazing accomplishment. Cia shared some Y thoughts, gave thanks to all for the 40 year recognition and invited everyone to come to a class. She reflected on the people and joy she has had teaching the Forever Fit Group (previously Elderobics), every Friday at St. Andrew’s, continuously, over the past 40 years. Brian Posavad, CEO of the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth, says he is not aware of any other YMCA fitness professional with that amount of longevity in Canada.
In May of 1984, Cia started working for the Halifax YMCA on South Park Street, teaching children’s Ballet and Jazz Dance, then various types of Fitness classes (Salsafit, Change of Heart, Aerobics, Water Aerobics, Strength Training) and Senior’s Fitness classes (Forever Fit), to this day.
Cia started Cia’s Body Works in 1992 and formalized her various teaching & instructing of classes and locations into her business of dance, fitness, yoga and personal training, with the motto “making fitness fun”.
Prior to 1984, Cia had a successful professional Dance career in Halifax, Montreal and Ottawa (Le Groupe de La Place Royale).
The YMCA Strong Staff Event was held November 28th, 2024 at St. Mary’s Boat Club in Halifax, NS.
The St. Andrew’s Church Gym on Coburg Road is also the location for many YOGA with Cia! classes.
